As previously announced last year, the death march of Windows Mobile is still continuing. Last week Microsoft reminded customers that additional Windows Marketplace downloads from your Windows Mobile device will not be possible after May 9th, 2012.
The Windows Mobile 6.5 marketplace launched way back in November of 2009 and never really got a chance. Some say it peaked at 7000 apps and quickly dwindled after the submissions were stopped around July 15th, 2011.
The old Microsoft MyPhone backup/restore service completely shut down on October 6, 2011.
Windows Mobile is the predecessor of Microsoft’s current platform, Windows Phone, which uses the Windows Phone Marketplace to download applications and thus a separate entity.

This FAQ explains in detail what is entailed in the Mainstream and Extended support policies.
Additionally, hardware OEM partners will stop distributing Windows Mobile 6.x devices on Oct. 31, 2013, and Windows Embedded Handheld devices running Windows Mobile 6.x on April 30, 2017.
However, OEM partners can use the rebranded Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 which is basically a slightly modified Windows Mobile 6.5 and it will be supported until January 14, 2020. So the consumer side may be going on the way side, but corporate ruggedized OEM devices from Motorola, Intermec, Honeywell, Psion and others will have until the next decade to decide next steps..
