Windows 10 Licensing Becomes More Complicated

When Microsoft began touting Windows 10, it seemed like a single OS that was perpetually updated would actually make licensing easier. And, at first – that dream seemed close to realization.

However, since the initial delivery of the first iteration of Windows 10, that has all changed. While the consumer version of Windows 10 is still free in most cases and home users don’t have to worry about licensing, business users have been inundated with update after update. Licensing for Windows 10 remains a maniacal twist that still requires a licensing scientist to solve. Essentially, through Microsoft’s licensing schemes, business users are subsidizing the free copies of Windows 10. Now, where have we heard this type of model before? Could Windows 10 actually represent the first socialist OS platform ever?

To make it even more confusing, Microsoft just announced a brand new Windows 10 SKU, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. This particular edition is intended for hardware that supports intensive operations.

So, what was once a welcome and simplistic view of the future of Windows, is now…

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Windows 10 Enterprise– Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 10 IoT
  • Windows 10 Mobile
  • Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Windows 10 Pro for Business
  • Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
  • Windows 10 S

If you’re running a free version of Windows 10 today – make sure to thank a business user.
