Windows 10 April 2018 Update hasn’t been Microsoft’s smoothest feature upgrade. Though it seems there’s not a lot of reports of bluescreens, there are some nagging issues.
One of those nagging issues is a problem where running certain apps will cause the entire device to freeze or seemingly lockup.
Microsoft has promised an update will be available today (Patch Tuesday for May 2018), but there’s a workaround in the interim…
If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart:
- Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen. If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
- If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.
Of course, we’ll watch and wait to see if this fix is available today. Sometimes – particularly with Microsoft patching – the best laid plans can go off the rails quickly. There’s too many times over the past few years where a single patch gives birth to new problems. Cut off one head and two more grows in its place.
