And, Oh Yeah. Windows Server, Too

Instead of getting the fanfare of a personal blog post announcement that Windows 10 April Update did, the Windows Server version got an addendum. A Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel update post from March 29, 2018, got the following simple, one-sentence update… UPDATE: Windows Server, version 1803 will be generally available for Software Assurance customers on May 7, 2018. You can access the VLSC portal on that date to download the bits. So, the next iteration of Windows Server will also be available for delivery the first of May. Why didn’t Windows Server get the same exaltation? Just some logical speculation, but, considering Microsoft is trying to move its customers to the cloud, and considering the massively positive results of its revenue reporting on April 26, 2018 led b...

Guest Access in SMB2 for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Disabled by Default

Microsoft Security recommends that guest access for SMB2 be disabled. And, while some third-party services and products might require it, Microsoft’s operating systems have not required it since Windows 2000. However, there are many legacy products and services that might be affected by Microsoft’s latest decision to secure its customers by disabling guess access by default. Customers will need to test to ensure critical systems still work before deploying Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and/or Windows Server 2016 version 1709. Microsoft has provided guidance on how to re-enable guess access through a registry edit and GPO. See: Guest access in SMB2 disabled by default in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and Windows Server 2016 version 1709   Looking for an awesome, no-nons...

Upgrading Windows Server 2012 to 2016 Removes Time Server Role

If you’re using a Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 server as a Time Server for your organization, you’re better off just doing a clean installation of Windows Server 2016 instead of the in-place upgrade. According to KB4051628… After you do an in-place upgrade on the computer to install Windows Server 2016 Version 1607, the computer is no longer advertised as a time server. There’s actually a pretty easy fix. The upgrade simply doesn’t set a registry value during installation. Per the same KB article: Locate the following registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer Set the DWORD value of Enabled to 1.   Looking for an awesome, no-nonsense technical conference for IT Pros, Developers, and DevOps?
