For those looking for Storage Spaces Direct in Microsoft’s latest delivery of Windows Server (version 1709), you can stop looking.
Per the Release Notes:
Storage Spaces Direct is not included in Windows Server, version 1709.
It is also not supported to introduce servers running Windows Server, version 1709 into a Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces Direct deployment.
Storage Spaces Direct was introduced in Windows Server 2016 and is the foundation for our hyper-converged platform.
We have been listening to customer feedback and working to deliver the next set of innovations for our hyper-converged platform. … However, these new features have not yet achieved the level of validation for production deployment, so we decided to keep them in preview for a little longer and skip Windows Server, version 1709.
Essentially, Microsoft is working on the next evolution of Storage Spaces Direct and it wasn’t ready for prime time. The company is hedging its bets on the Windows Servicing model and hoping customers will just wait for the next semi-annual upgrade in hopes that it will be available then.
