SSRS 2005 Installation issue encountered for ConfigMgr 2007 R2

Recently an interesting installation issue occurred for myITForum member Eric Morrison, while attempting to get SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 installed and running for ConfigMgr 2007 R2.

Eric’s message:

I am trying to install SRS on our new central server and I am at a road block I don’t know how to get past.
Configuration: Server 2008 Std. X64| Sql Server 2005 X64 Std. SP2 | SCCM SP1 R2

I followed the steps here to configure the reporting services: http://blogs.technet.com/mwiles/archive/2009/02/19/east-setup-of-srs-with-config-manager-r2.aspx

I then installed the Reporting Services Point on the server. When I browse to Reporting Services, right click on my server and go to Properties everything is grayed out.
I found this page, but it does not help: http://blogs.technet.com/mwiles/archive/2009/02/18/reporting-services-server-properties-grayed-out.aspx

When I look at the SRSRP.LOG file it has the following:

STATMSG: ID=7403 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT" SYS=US-AUS-CMCN1 SITE=CN1 PID=3860 TID=6160 GMTDATE=Wed Jul 29 20:43:54.792 2009 ISTR0="US-AUS-CMCN1" ISTR1="" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0 SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT 7/29/2009 3:43:54 PM 6160 (0x1810)
Failures reported during periodic health check by the SRS Server US-AUS-CMCN1. Will retry check in 57 minutes SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT 7/29/2009 3:43:54 PM 6160 (0x1810)
Waiting for changes for 57 minutes SMS_SRS_REPORTING_POINT 7/29/2009 3:43:54 PM 6160 (0x1810)
If anyone can give me any pointers I greatly appreciate it.

I had Eric check to see if he could access the Report Server administration page; normally that would be:

/reports">http://<reportserver>/reports

Eric indicated that he received:

Error Summary
HTTP Error 500.23 – Internal Server Error
An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode.

Troy Martin posted an excellent set of notes he kept during a similar installation (Eric reported it solved his issue)

These are my notes when installing SQL 2005 SRS. This may/may not work for you, but take a look anyway. In particular, see step #2
1. Confirm that Microsoft .Net Framework v1.1.4322 is installed and ASP.NET is configured and "Allowed" in IIS

2. Give ‘NT Authority\Network Service’ Modify permissions to "%SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files". This is the "work-area" SQL Reporting Services uses to build and compile reports

3. If SQL Reporting Services was NOT added as part of the original SQL Server 2005 install, then re-run SQL Server 2005 setup and add-in SQL Reporting Services
a. Service Account = Local system

4. If SQL Reporting Services was not apart of the original SQL Server 2005 install and was later add, (re)install SQL Server 2005 SP2 and then reboot computer

5. Configure Reporting Services
o Server Status = OK
o Report Server Virtual Directory = OK (However, you must create the ReportServer vdir)
o Report Manager Virtual Directory = NOT CONFIGURED (Create Reports vdir)
o Windows Service Identity = Built-In Account\Local System
o Web Service Identity:
* ASP.NET Service Account = NT Authority\Network Service
* Report Server (Application Pool) = ReportServer
* Report Manager (Application Pool) = ReportServer
* In IIS, verify the application pool for Reports and ReportServer virtual directories are both set to ReportServer
o Database Setup:
* Server Name =
* Database Name = ReportServer (click "NEW" to create the database)
* Credentials Type = Service Credential

6. Open Reporting website in browser
o /Reports">http://<reportserver>/Reports
Add \momdasa as a user to MOM databases:
o OnePoint, Database Role Membership = dbo
o SystemCenterReporting, Database Role Membership = dbo

Add accounts to MOM server local groups:
o MOM User (\momssa, NT Authority\Network Service)
o MOM Administrator (\momdasa, NT Authority\Network Service)
