A couple weeks ago it was reported that Amazon may bring actual text messaging (SMS) to Alexa devices, allowing customers to send short messages through Alexa directly to smartphones. Currently, customers can send text messages, but only between Alexa devices. The rumored new service proposal would supply a unique “phone number” for each Alexa customer.
Customers are reporting that overnight such a service existed in the web-based Alexa UI for a short time. The feature was called “Conversations” and once clicked on, asked to agree to the service terms and then stated that the service was “free for a short time.”
Its possible that Amazon is preparing a new Alexa update and that it was testing final functionality of the upcoming feature.
