SharePoint 2019 public preview is now available, and even though the software is installed on-premises, it has a very cloud-y approach:
SharePoint Server 2019 has been designed, developed, and tested with the Microsoft Software as a Service (SaaS) strategy, building on Office 365 as its core. Drawing extensively from the success of SharePoint Online, SharePoint Server 2019 offers new and improved, highly flexible deployment options. You can choose from a traditional on-premises deployment, a hosted service with Microsoft Office 365 sites powered by Microsoft SharePoint Online, deployment in Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), or a hybrid configuration, empowering you to choose how and when you take advantage of on-premises or cloud-based solutions, all while providing a consistent and familiar user experience.

A time is coming when Microsoft will flip the switch and mandate its customers operate in its cloud, and as time progresses the value between staying on-premises versus a migration to cloud operations will flip. Microsoft’s investments are all cloud-based and its on-premises software quality and features will start to display that. Its evident that Microsoft wants its customers to migrate to its cloud services and wants them to do that quickly. With the release of public previews for the 2019 versions of Exchange, Skype Server, and SharePoint, the company is making it very clear.
