Rumormill: Amazon to Announce an Updated Echo in September

The original Echo speaker is coming up on 3 years old. That’s a pretty long life for gadgets these days.

Just 3 days ago, Amazon put its flagship Alexa device in the discount bin at $99. According to reports, this low price is supposed to last until September 4th (a little over a week away). Additionally, the company’s smaller device, the Dot, is also on sale – though the discount isn’t as significant at just $5 off.

Amazon regularly discounts its Alexa devices, but the sale doesn’t usually last that long. This particular sale has many considering that Amazon is essentially trying to clear stock to make way for a big announcement sometime in September.

According to sources, Amazon will be refreshing both the Dot and the Echo sometime this year to help maintain its lead in the voice-assisted speaker market. Both Google and Microsoft (through 3rd party sources) are producing new hardware to release soon. So, this latest sale could mean that an announcement is coming shortly.

UPDATE August 29, 2017: More evidence has emerged today. The Echo speaker is now listed as unavailable and “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”
