PowerShell Core 6.0 is a new edition of PowerShell that is cross-platform (Windows, macOS, and Linux), open-source, and built for heterogeneous environments and the hybrid cloud.
After much work over the past many months, Microsoft has taken the wraps off the next iteration of PowerShell. Now called PowerShell Core, this 6.0 version runs cross-platform for Windows, Mac, and Linux administrators.
This essentially means that there are now two different editions of PowerShell. PowerShell Windows still runs on Windows and is powered by the .NET Framework. PowerShell Core runs on the additional platforms and is built on top of the .NET Core library.
