Tip: Adding Support for 802.1x Through the Hyper-V vSwitch in Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019

Starting with Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019, Microsoft added the ability to provide support for 802.1x through the Hyper-V vSwitch.

To enable it, a registry modification is required. Run the following with elevated credentials:

reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTControlSet\vmsmp\parameters” /v 8021xEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
shutdown /r /t 0

This makes the necessary registry modification and then restarts the computer.

2018 Holdover Bug Causing Renewed Problems with Network Connectivity for Windows 7

A bug that has existed for much of 2018 for Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 has once again begun causing problems for users of those operating system versions.

The original bug forced many to reinstall hardware drivers for their network cards…

After you apply this update, the network interface controller may stop working on some client software configurations. This occurs because of an issue related to a missing file, oem<number>.inf. The exact problematic configurations are currently unknown.

To locate the network device, launch devmgmt.msc. It may appear under Other Devices.

To automatically rediscover the NIC and install drivers, select Scan for Hardware Changes from the Action menu.

Alternatively, install the drivers for the network device by right-clicking the device and choosing Update. Then choose Search automatically for updated driver software or Browse my computer for driver software.

UPDATE: The following is now resolved with KB4487345.

However, a new wrinkle may have been exposed in that network shares are no longer accessible using SMBv2.

The problem is exhibited in both KB4480960 and KB4480970.

A workaround has been offered that requires modifying the Windows registry – proper rights are needed to make the change:

reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

A reboot is required.

You can also just remove the update, but this security patch is pretty critical to install.

Tip: Reset the Chromebook Hardware

It’s rare, but it can happen. Sometimes the Chromebook hardware can lock into an unknown state that essentially looks like it has stopped booting or appears to be out of battery.

In this case, when you can’t get to the options for restarting or resetting the OS, you can perform a hardware reset.

For most Chromebooks you perform a hardware reset by pressing the Refresh and Power buttons simultaneously.

Some Chromebooks have an actual power button included in the keyboard layout, but for those without, you’ll need to use the hardware power button on the Chromebook’s side with the Refresh key.

Additionally, for some Chromebooks, resetting the hardware requires pressing a special reset button, unplugging the power cable, or removing and re-inserting the battery. Search your specific manufacturer’s website for the proper sequence.

Forgo the Amazon Echo Auto Sticky Dashboard Mount for the Official Air Vent Mount

Despite not being widely available yet, Amazon has begun shipping its Echo Auto device to those who pre-ordered the device in 2018. The device is said to have been pre-ordered by over 1 million customers which may help explain why it has taken Amazon so long to begin fulfilling orders.

The Echo Auto device comes with a dashboard mount. This mount adheres with a sticky pad. Most car owners try to avoid adhering anything to their car, but Amazon now has a separate add-on that can be used to mount the Echo Auto device in the car’s vent.

Available for $15 from Amazon:  Echo Auto Air Vent Mount

The Air Vent Mount is actually in stock.  Until Amazon kicks manufacturing into a higher gear, you can display the air vent mount as a token of hope.

Tip: Best PDF Reader and Annotator for ChromeOS

It’s pretty regular that the question arises for new (and old) ChromeOS users about which is the best PDF Reader with editing and annotating features available.

It’s easy to get lost down the rabbit hole of researching, testing, and figuring because there are a growing number of options for ChromeOS users. However, one solution that continues to fill the feature list is the offering from XODO. XODO PDF Reader & Annotator provides pretty much the depth of features generally requested, and its available for multiple platforms as installable apps but also as a web-based tool. Plus, if you create an account, you can store your PDFs in the XODO bookshelf and share with others.

XODO is available for the following platforms…

January 2019 Patch Tuesday Update for Windows 10 1803 Prohibits Pinning Web Links

Microsoft has begun to deliver its security updates for exposed bugs for its regular Patch Tuesday for January 2019. In doing so, Windows 10 1803 comes with an annoyance that users should be aware of:

After installing this update, some users cannot pin a web link on the Start menu or the taskbar.

Microsoft is working on a fix and promises to deliver this fix sometime near the end of January.

Windows 10 Patch Tuesday Updates Come with Inability to Authenticate Hotspots

UPDATE: Microsoft has now solved this issue through new updates for Windows 10 1803, 1709 and 1703.

Original article…

Microsoft today is delivering its Patch Tuesday updates for the various products suffering from security woes. However, those that want to deploy the updates for Windows 10 right away, may want to hold off and test.

All supported versions of Windows 10 come with the following bug:

After installing this update, third-party applications may have difficulty authenticating hotspots.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available late January.

Incidentally, this issue also affects Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012, Windows Embedded 8 Standard.

In the Next Update, Windows 10 Will Set Aside at Least 7GB Disk Space for Updates, Cache

Microsoft is working now on a feature for Windows 10 that will set aside ‘reserve space’ on every computer. Microsoft hopes this reserve space will help make Windows 10 computers more reliable, allowing updates, apps, cache, and temporary files to have an adequate environment to operate.

The company says that reserve space will begin at about 7GB but will act dynamically to increase when needed based on how often and how much the computer is used.

Without reserved storage, if a user almost fills up her or his storage, several Windows and application scenarios become unreliable. Windows and application scenarios may not work as expected if they need free space to function. With reserved storage, updates, apps, temporary files, and caches are less likely to take away from valuable free space and should continue to operate as expected. Reserved storage will be introduced automatically on devices that come with version 1903 pre-installed or those where 1903 was clean installed. You don’t need to set anything up—this process will automatically run in the background. The rest of this blog post will share additional details on how reserved storage can help optimize your device.

Tip: Office Customization Tool

What used to be a convoluted process for architecting deployments of Microsoft Office using MSI extractions and command-lines has been simplified by Microsoft through a web-based tool.

The Office Customization Tool creates the configuration files that are used to deploy Office in large organizations. These configuration files give you more control over an Office installation: you can define which applications and languages are installed, how those applications should be updated, and application preferences. After creating the configuration files, you can use them with the Office Deployment Tool to deploy a customized version of Office.

Tip: Onscreen Map for All ChromeOS Keyboard Shortcuts

Like any operating system, ChromeOS contains specific keyboard combinations to enable shortcuts to certain operations.

In ChromeOS, these keyboard shortcuts are always available to review. To view the keyboard shortcuts, just type the following in the Chrome web browser:

With the keyboard overlay on the screen, hit the Ctrl, Shift, or Alt keys (or a combination of the three) and the shortcut combinations will display onscreen.

Microsoft Teams is Part of the Default Installation for Office 365 Business Starting with 1901

In case you missed it, Skype for Business Online is no longer included in Office 365 for new customers. Instead, Microsoft Teams is now the primary client for meetings and calling in Office 365.

Tip: Sideloading Fire TV Apps Directly from a Chromebook

Getting Android apps installed on your Fire TV device is usually a convoluted process. It usually requires you to install a download app on the Fire TV device and then know the full URL to the Android app’s apk.

With the ability for ChromeOS devices to install and load Android apps, the process for sideloading Fire TV apps becomes a lot easier. Essentially, any Android app that you can install on the ChromeOS device can be used to install on the Fire TV device. Not everything will work there, of course, but for apps like the Spectrum TV app, it’s an easy way to get it there.

Incidentally, Spectrum has been horribly slow at developing a supported app for Fire TV, however, except for a few minor screen issues, it works fine.

The app to install on your ChromeOS device is Apps2Fire.

Apps2Fire provides an easy interface for locating and then transferring and installing apps that are installed locally on the ChromeOS device.

To make it work, you first need to prepare the Fire TV device by enabling both debugging and allowing apps from unknown sources, as shown in the image…

You also need to give Apps2Fire the IP address of your Fire TV device. This can be found going into Settings – My Fire TV – Network.

Once you have the Fire TV device’s IP address, enter it into the Setup area of Apps2Fire.

Now, with your ChromeOS device connected to your Fire TV device, you can select any installed Android apps to transfer and install.

App2Fire has a slew of other features you’ll want to check out. It does much more than just make app sideloading easier. Here are a few additional features:

– Push apps from the mobile to the Fire TV
– Launch apps on the Fire TV
– Download apps from the Fire TV to your mobile
– Uninstall apps from the Fire TV
– Upload files (.apk, .jpg, .mp4,…) from your sd card to the Fire TV
– Rename files on Fire TV’s sd card
– Make Screenshots from Fire TV screen
– Scanner for devices
– Pause and restart fire tv
