Microsoft Will Extend SQL Server and Windows Server Support if Customers Move to the Cloud

Microsoft has devised yet another scheme to get customers to move to its Azure cloud service. For SQL Server 2008 (EOL, July 9, 2019) and Windows 2008 (EOL, January 14, 2020) customers, by hosting their workloads in Azure, Microsoft will get an extra 3 years of support and discounts for Azure.

SQL Server 2008

  • Rehost your SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 with no application code changes in Azure Virtual Machines
  • Get three years of Extended Security Updates at no additional charge, and upgrade to a current version when ready
  • Use existing licenses and save up to 55 percent on migrations to Azure SQL Database with Azure Hybrid Benefit

 

Windows Server 2008

 

  • Rehost Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 workloads to Azure
  • Get three years of Extended Security Updates at no additional charge, and upgrade to a current version when ready
  • Use existing licenses and save up to 80 percent on Azure Virtual Machines with Azure Hybrid Benefit and Reserved Instances
