Microsoft Sets Expiration for Office Viewer Applications

Microsoft created viewer applications for each of its Office products for those that needed to read an Excel spreadsheet, Word document, or PowerPoint slide without having to install the full product. The company has already set the expiration date for the Word viewer for this month, but has now issued an ultimatum for the viewers for Excel and PowerPoint, too:

The Excel viewer, PowerPoint viewer, PowerPoint 2007 viewer, and the Office Compatibility Pack will be retired in April, 2018. At that time, they will no longer be available for download and will no longer receive security updates.

To view Office docs without a viewer, Microsoft now recommends just downloading the mobile versions of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for Windows 10, iOS, and Android from each one’s respective app store. Of course, Microsoft wishes everyone would opt to just subscribe to Office 365 instead.
