Apple Adds Chromebook Support to Its Apple Music Android App

On Monday, Apple announced wide-ranging new and enhanced media services for music, TV/movies, and magazines. As part of that announcement, Apple seemed to show that it is open to building its footprint on non-Apple devices. For example, its new Apple TV service will be available as an Amazon Fire TV option. Another example comes in the form of an update for the company’s Apple Music Android app. An update to the app on Monday gives Google Chromebook users a much better Apple Music experience. If you have the app installed, it will update automatically. If you’ve yet to try Apple Music on a Chromebook, you can download it from the Google Play Store (if your Chromebook supports Android apps). Get it here: Apple Music

Tip: Connecting and Using Apple Music with Alexa

Amazon and Apple have recently delivered Apple Music for owners of Alexa-enabled devices. Amazon has added Apple Music as another option in its list of Music services. Setting it up is as easy as choosing it, enabling it, linking it, and using it. We’ve seen some websites suggest that you have to enable a special Apple skill to get this to work, but that’s not the case. Amazon has done a good job integrating Apple Music into its normal music service line up. To set it up: [1] In the Alexa mobile app (not available from the web version of Alexa), go to Settings and then locate Music under Alexa Preferences. [2] Once in the Music area, choose the option to Link New Service. [3] Select Apple Music on the Link Service page. [4] Once you select the Apple Music option, the Alexa app ...

We’re thrilled to bring Apple Music – one of the most popular music services in the US – to Echo customers this holiday.”

Tip: Add Alexa to Your Apple Watch

You might think that because you’re part of the Apple ecosystem that you’re stuck with the poorer performing Siri personal assistant. Though Apple does force Siri to be the default assistant on most devices, you can still install Microsoft’s Cortana app and use Alexa through Reverb.ai or Amazon’s Music and Shopping apps. But, those apps are for iPhones and iPads. What if you want to use Alexa on an Apple Watch? Developer Atadore has now released to the iTunes store an app called “Voice in a Can” which installs and runs on both an iPhone and iPad, but also runs standalone on the Apple Watch. Voice in a Can brings Alexa to your Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad. It works on your watch standalone, without needing your phone. Not all content is supported, for exa...

Microsoft Brings Cortana to the iPad

Despite sitting on every Windows 10 PC in the world, Microsoft’s digital voice assistant surprisingly sits far behind both Alexa and Google Assistant in market share. And, with no mobile story now of its own, the company continues to push its wares to existing popular platforms. Cortana for the iPhone and Android smartphones has been available for some time, and the software company continues to make improvements. But, now a version of Cortana is available for iPads, Apple’s slate tablets. Available from iTunes: Cortana for iPad The functionality is the same as it exists on the iPhone, but in the case of the larger screen Cortana can display more information. Consider an iPad screen similar to what Amazon has done with the Echo Show, Echo Dot, and even through integration with ...

Tablet Shipments Grew, Amazon Gained Traction, and Microsoft Nowhere to Be Found

IDC today has released stats on what it calls the “slate” and “detachable” tablet market, of which many might assume that Microsoft would register somewhere in the top 5 with its Surface devices. But, while the Surface line may appear popular based on promotions and social media hype, Microsoft’s hardware didn’t make the list. It should be noted, though, that the report focuses on worldwide shipments and not just the U.S. Interestingly enough, even with Apple retaining the lead, Amazon was able to gain market share by passing Samsung to sit at number two. Amazon produces consumption tablets that are just “good enough” while Apple and Samsung have long battled at the top of the list with leading specs and overhyped and sometimes groundbreaking...

As Intel Warns Against Patches, Apple Finally Releases Protection for Older Systems

Just this week, Intel began telling OEMs to hold off delivering the update for the processor security vulnerabilities and to wait for a better one. Intel identified an issue that caused computers to bluescreen and reboot. This hasn’t deterred Apple from releasing mitigating patches for its older operating systems, however, many believe that new operating system patches might need to be developed and delivered once the fixed Intel update is available. For those dealing with Apple’s older operating systems, the company now has security updates ready for macOS High Sierra, Sierra, and El Capitan. Details: About the security content of macOS High Sierra 10.13.3, Security Update 2018-001 Sierra, and Security Update 2018-001 El Capitan   Looking for an awesome, no-nonsense techn...
