Build a Cheap Android Tablet for yourself or your Kids

I just purchased 2 (7” Polaroid PMID701c) from Big Lots for $89 each. They each had Gingerbread 2.3 installed. I then upgraded then to ICS 4.0 with this

ICS 4.0 Update (official update)

Then I followed this thread and installed this guys script and now have a fully functioning ICS 4.0 tablet with Google Play market for my kids.

installed this script

Last but not least  I followed this:

How to make Android child-friendly

http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/tablets/how-to-make-android-child-friendly-1045708

I installed the following free:

App Lock

Safe Browser

This has been a fun project. My kids now have the following all in one:

  • MP3 player
  • Movie player
  • Game player
  • Book reader
  • Email reader
  • Child Safe Web browser
  • Google Map (able to find your location based on your router, as it doesn’t have a GPS antenna)
  • Google Phone (if I enable VOIP)
  • ETC…

And I’ve learned a lot about android.

Only downside

This device doesn’t have a GPS and it doesn’t have a Camera but at 7 and 12 they don’t need them.

Notice I don’t have a social media listed above, I don’t believe either of my children need them, as a mater of fact the email and browser are disabled on the 7 year olds tablet.

In all honesty if it the only reason the 12 year old has internet is so he can do research for school and email so he can email his cousins and grandma.
