A Renewed Promise on Software and Device Update Coverage

Month-after-month, week-after-week, Microsoft continues its onslaught of updates. Many customers are starting to just ignore the updates due to “update fatigue” and in some cases this can be detrimental to the overall health and security of software and devices.

Remember Blackberry Thumb?  Update Fatigue may very well be the next industry recognized malaise worthy of physical and mental claims against workman’s comp. Who knows?

For that reason, here at myITforum you can expect less content on just common updates. Customers are seriously getting tired of the litany of “what’s new, what’s fixed, and what’s broken” whenever a new update is on the wires or whenever the Insider program sneezes. Some sites write an entire article just to cover an Insider person stating that no new updates are coming. Most of you agree that that’s crazy.

So, here’s our promise…

When you read about software and device updates here on myITforum, there will be useful and actionable information attached. We’ll either focus on the seriousness of not applying an update, letting you know when an update should be avoided, and alerting you to widely (and sometimes not-widely) reporting problems with updates. And, instead of writing about every single update, we’ll lump them all together where applicable.

This promise ensures you get something useful instead of a strategy to fill your RSS feed with deletable and unreadable content.

The Daily Debrief at IT/Dev Connections 2018

Each year, based on attendee feedback and popularity of mini-events, the conference adds new features. Essentially, this conference continues to grow because of community feedback. Its always transforming into more of what is important to IT Pros and developers.

This year, one of the new features is the Daily Debrief.

According to the IT/Dev Connections blog:

What is the Daily Debrief?

At the end of each conference day we set aside 2 complete hours for a Daily Debrief for each content track (Cloud, Data, Developer, and Security). The Daily Debrief provides direct access to the day’s speakers setup in a panel format where attendees can ask questions directly. Each Daily Debrief is emceed by the Track Chair. This gives attendees the opportunity to ensure that the day’s content delivery is clarified and understood and also opens occasion to solve the most difficult problems facing the organization.

This will be an amazing end to each conference day. Imagine attending a conference and getting exactly what you need to enhance your professional life and solve your most critical business and technology problems.

The conference runs October 15-18 in Dallas, Texas.

Android and iOS Get Enhancements to Skype for Business

The Android and iOS apps for Skype for Business have been updated with the following features:

Present in a meeting from your mobile app—Now you can present content right from Android or iOS device. No more emailing files and links back and forth when you present from your phone or tablet. Now sharing a PowerPoint deck in a meeting is as easy as selecting the file from your favorite cloud drive and presenting right from your phone. On Android, you can also share a file stored on the device itself. With swipe gestures, you can easily transition between different slides. Once shared, the PowerPoint file also becomes available in the meeting’s content bin for other participants to download or present.

Video-based Screen Sharing for mobile devices—We’re also continuing to enhance the content viewing experience with Skype for Business on mobile devices by using Video-based Screen Sharing (VbSS) for content viewing on iOS and Android apps. The initial setup is much faster, the experience more reliable, while also consuming network bandwidth efficiently. It provides a seamless viewing experience, especially if you are sharing animated content such as CAD models.
