Amazon was prepared to stand up for data privacy for its Alexa devices in an Arkansas murder case, but at the last minute the defendant decided to relinquish rights to the recorded data in hopes of clearing his name.
According to CBS4Indy:
In paperwork filed Monday, Bates said Amazon could share the information and Amazon said it handed over material on Friday.
What’s still undetermined is if Amazon’s Echo device was able to capture information that could resolve the case. Amazon Alexa devices wait for “wake” words before listening – at least that’s what Amazon says. This case may also help determine if Amazon’s account is true.
