Alexa Tip: Hue v2 Hub Required for New Light Controls

This is disappointing news, but the original Phillips Hue v1 Hub will not work with the latest Alexa capabilities that provides richer light controls.

Announced last week, Amazon has added new API capabilities so that lighting systems can use Alexa’s voice controls to change colors and enact color themes. Prior to the update Alexa users could only control on and off through voice.

Unfortunately, though, those that have already invested in Hue v1 Hub systems won’t be able to use this new capability. Those with the original systems are being asked to upgrade to the v2 Hub if they want color options. Customers are complaining because upgrading the hub and the lights can be an expensive prospect.

However, the Samsung SmartThings Hub can work with the Hue lighting systems, without the need to replace all the lights. The SmartThings Hub is just less than $100 and saves having to replace everything.
