In our Alexa device farm, we currently have the Drop-in feature setup to essentially replicate a whole house intercom system. This is setup through the Drop-in option in the General section of Settings of each device in the Alexa mobile app (this option is not available to configure in the web version) and by choosing Only my household.
We’ve also set this option to help eliminate stray connections, i.e., someone from outside the house being able to drop-in to any of our devices.
Amazon has updated this function so that you can both configure per device but also per contact.
This makes it pretty convenient so that, for example, you can allow only Aunt Gertrude to be able to drop-in only to the device in the kitchen – essentially, setting up a single Alexa device as the gateway to the outside world. Of course, with the recently added direct phone dial feature, you can use that, too.
To set this up, you go into your Contacts list in the Alexa mobile app, locate the single individual’s contact card and toggle the Drop-in feature for just that person. If the Drop-in feature needs to be configured differently than your current configuration to work, the app will prompt you to reconfigure it.
