Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.
Alexa is available for Amazon devices Echo, Echo 2, Dot, Tap, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Look, Echo Connect, Dash Wand, Amazon Cloud Cam, Fire tablets, and Fire TV, Amazon Fire TV Edition TVs, in the Music app, but also on iOS, Android, and the web with Reverb.ai.
This week’s skill: TV Guide
Description: The world of TV is very exciting, we’ll guide you through it! With hundreds of shows on TV and streaming, we’ll let you know what to watch, and when to watch it. Our editors have culled through the extensive TV schedule — and streaming services — to find the best shows, movies and events you need to check out, each day, each weekend, and all year long.
Real world use: One of our favorite daily uses (well, for the adults in the house, anyway) is listening to the day’s news through Alexa’s Flash Briefing capability. With Flash Briefings you can setup your own personalized news sources and Alexa will deliver the headlines and information. It’s a great way to catch up quickly on world, country, and local news while getting ready in the morning.
Most of you know that I’m a huge TV buff. I use television as a way to decompress at the end of a working day. We’re also cord-cutters here so we don’t watch live TV, but we do subscribe to Hulu and that gives us access to the latest shows. This latest skill from TV Guide, is a great way to determine what TV shows to plan for. The skill isn’t a standalone skill, but is developed solely to work as part of the Flash Briefing sources.
