Alexa Skill of the Week: The Great Courses Plus

Alexa Skill of the Week: The Great Courses Plus

Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.

This week’s skill: The Great Courses Plus

Description: This skill allows you to listen to over 400 courses and other great educational material. To use this skill you must have an account for The Great Courses Plus (

Real world use: If you’re hankering to know more, you have to learn more. A recent addition to Alexa’s skills catalog has turned me onto a service I would have never found otherwise. The service is called “The Great Courses Plus.” With over 400 courses (and growing) in various categories including history, science, health, music, math, literature and others, the wealth of information you can stuff into your brain at your leisure is amazing.

And, not only does the service now support delivery of its learning content through Alexa devices (including audio and video – hint: Echo Show), but the service also supports the full range of streaming devices including Fire TV and Fire tablets.

The web site is located at:

The service itself can look at bit pricey at $19.99 per month or $179.99 per year, but the amount and quality of content is impressive and the professors include experts from National Geographic, the Smithsonian, The Culinary Institute of America, The Mayo Clinic, and more. Plus, you’ll pay more for a single class at a community college than you will for access to the growing catalog of content at the Great Courses Plus.

Where to get it: You can locate The Great Courses Plus Skill in the Amazon Alexa app, enable it using your voice, or use the following web link: The Great Courses Plus
