Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.
This week’s skill: My Fitness Trainer
Description: My Fitness Trainer prompts you for the specific areas of your body you’d like to exercise, asks for the time you have to exercise, and then creates a workout tailored to your specifications.
Real world use: As time goes on, fitness skills available for Alexa get better – and the My Fitness Trainer helps prove this. My Fitness Trainer is a personal exercise trainer. It has a catalog of exercises that it picks from to generate a new workout on the fly. When the skill starts it will ask you to give it one of four areas (upper body, lower body, whole body, or core) you want to focus on. It will then ask you for a time allotment to workout. And, based on what you specify, the skill will generate a different workout.
The first time I used this skill, I was a little overwhelmed by how quickly it transitioned between exercises. It was difficult to keep up without knowing what was next. However, I learned that if you ask the skill to “pause” between exercises, not only can you get a rest period, but Alexa will tell you which exercise is next so you can prepare.
Overall, the skill is extremely useful, however, its like most generic fitness routines in that it can’t know what type of equipment you might own so it delivers workouts based on body weight exercises.
Using the skill is easy. Things you can say…
“Alexa ask my fitness trainer to start a new workout”
To pause the workout simply say : “Alexa pause”
To resume the workout simply say : “Alexa resume“
The skill maker says that new features are coming to customize the workout even better.
