Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.
This week’s skill: Highlights Magazine
Description: Bring the family together to try some terrifically toothsome tongue-twisters, laugh at family-friendly jokes, and reconnect with Goofus and Gallant. If you’re up for a challenge, push your imagination to the limits with Brain Play, or host a poetry slam in your living room. You can also listen to stories about animals, friendship, sports, and more, plus hear the timeless advice of Ask Arizona.
Real world use: I grew up reading Highlights Magazine in the doctor’s office and was probably the only time I was able to get my hands on a copy of this wonderful children’s periodical. I’d nervously rifle through the pages and try to locate a Crossword or some other game that would take my mind off the situation at hand. Being the doctor’s office as a kid could be extra stressful. In a kid’s creative mind, one could get worked up over what crazy thing the doctor might say or do. Looking back, its funny now to remember it was much ado about nothing – but the comfort of that Highlights Magazine makes the memory. It’s been a while since I’ve had a Highlights Magazine in my actual hands, but its good to know that the actual, physical magazine hasn’t been shuffled away from time like many other childhood things.
A new, official Alexa skill allows parents the ability to bring Highlights Magazine home. Its not the full experience of the magazine, but in this case, Alexa can be used to bring the family together through some Highlights Magazine games, articles, and information.
