Alexa Skill of the Week: CubeSolver

Alexa Skill of the Week: CubeSolver

Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.

This week’s skill: CubeSolver

Description: This skill will tell you how to solve any 3×3 Cube in as few a moves as possible, normally just 20.

Real world use: Growing up I had memorized all the moves to solve the Rubik’s Cube. I could impress my friends and family by solving the puzzle box in less than 30 seconds. Yeah, I was cool – or at least I thought I was.

These days, I can’t remember those steps – and quite honestly seems a waste of my time to go back and memorize them. I have more important – adult – things to do. However, my youngest daughter is as interested in solving the Rubik’s Cube as I was back in the day. Of course, I brag about my mad, youngster skills to my kids so my daughter hands me her Rubik’s Cube periodically and asks me to solve it. I can, but only after cheating by searching the Internet for instructions. She’s still impressed, though.

This new skill called CubeSolver gives Alexa the ability to walk me through solving the puzzle, but it also allows my daughter to do it, too. This makes her extremely happy. She explains to the skill how the mixed-up colors are laid out and it then tells her how to solve it. And, after a while of working with the skill, those moves stick in memory like they did for me in my youth.

Where to get it: You can locate the CubeSolver Skill in the Amazon Alexa app, enable it using your voice, or use the following web link: CubeSolver

Alexa is available for Amazon devices Echo, Echo 2, Dot, Tap, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Look, Echo Connect, Dash Wand, Amazon Cloud Cam, Fire tablets, and Fire TV, Amazon Fire TV Edition TVs, in the Music app, but also on iOS, Android, and the web with Reverb.ai.
