Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.
This week’s skill: Burglar Deterrent
Description: Burglar Deterrent is designed to help protect your home from unwanted visitors when you are out. It will give the illusion that your house is occupied using realistic audio to deter potential intruders. A would-be thief will be convinced someone is performing daily activities such as cleaning, talking, laughing, working in the home office and preparing food. This will compliment your existing security arrangements, giving you an extra level of reassurance.
Real world use: A couple weeks back, the Away Mode skill made our list of the week’s best. Away Mode touted itself as the first-ever home protection skill – but just like most things, copy-cats emerged. However, this latest skill of the week, Burglar Deterrent, is like Away Mode on steroids.
Just like Away Mode, Burglar Deterrent provides constant talking noises to make it seem like someone is home. But, what’s different about Burglar Deterrent is that you can choose a number of different “themes” or “environments.” For example, you can tell the skill to emulate a party and it will provide continuous music along with party discussion noises. Tell it to “protect the kitchen” and Alexa will play noises one would commonly hear in a kitchen, including the sounds of washing dishes.
Here’s a list of some of the environments…
– Living room (Sitting Room, Lounge, Den, or any general room) [NEW! – Choose from Day or Night version]
– Kitchen (Dining Area)
– Bathroom (Washroom, Shower)
– Home Office (Study)
– Guard Dog (Barking dog)
– Games Room (Playroom) [NEW!],
– Party [NEW!],
– Baby crying (Nursery) [NEW!],
– Garage (Workshop, Shed, D.I.Y.) [NEW!]
