Alexa Skill of the Week: AnyPod

Alexa Skill of the Week: AnyPod

Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.

This week’s skill: AnyPod

Description: AnyPod lets you play any podcast. Enrich yourself with thousands of comedy, drama, music, tech, news, education, and pop culture audio programs.

Real world use: I’ve been a long time Podcast listener and fan, but for some reason my love of Podcasts had not translated to Amazon’s Echo speakers – though it seems now like such a logical thing. I guess I was so caught up in enabling my Smart Home and listening to music the Alexa-enabled devices that I hit a mental brick wall.

But, recently, I began adding Podcast listening to my daily menu of Alexa media options. But, of course, like anything you want to do, there’s usually a thousand ways to do it and only a few of them are actually any good. Like any app store, the Alexa skill store has a number of Podcast skills available, but trying to figure out which is the best takes time.

Fortunately, I was directed by some other Podcast aficionados to AnyPod. AnyPod is not a new skill, but has recently had some significant feature updates. AnyPod has a huge catalog of Podcasts it supports and I’ve yet to look for something and not find it. Incidentally, if you can’t find a favorite Podcast with AnyPod, you can email the developer to get it added. Send your request to anypodskill@gmail.com.

There’s also a few web resources to use with AnyPod to help you with the skill/service:

Using the skill is easy. Here’s some of the things you can do…

  • Subscribe to a series
  • Play, fast forward, start over, restart/start over, next, previous, oldest, latest
  • Fast forward by minutes or seconds, rewind by minutes or seconds
  • Start playing at a certain time
  • Play by episode number

Where to get it: You can locate the AnyPod Skill in the Amazon Alexa app, enable it using your voice, or use the following web link: AnyPod

Alexa is available for Amazon devices Echo, Echo 2, Dot, Tap, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Look, Echo Connect, Dash Wand, Amazon Cloud Cam, Fire tablets, and Fire TV, Amazon Fire TV Edition TVs, in the Music app, but also on iOS, Android, and the web with Reverb.ai.
