Alexa Skill of the Week: Skyrim Very Special Edition

Alexa Skill of the Week: Skyrim Very Special Edition

Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.

This week’s skill: Skyrim Very Special Edition

Description: Bethesda Game Studios is proud to present Skyrim… for Alexa. Yes, that’s right, the version of Skyrim you never saw coming has finally arrived on the platform you never asked for.

Real world use: Alexa, to me, is a tool to get things done – and get those things done quickly. I query for weather, submit shopping list items, figure out if a celebrity is still alive or not, control my smart home devices, and other things. But, there’s another other side of Alexa that I rarely take advantage of and that’s the gaming capabilities. I even have the Echo buttons but have truly only used them a couple times.

But, as popular as Skyrim is, I’ve given this latest official Alexa skill a much deeper attempt. This Skyrim skill is about as official a real-world game as you can get. Its modeled after the video game, but feels very much like the old Zork collection of text-based adventure games. And, if you have the time and patience to wait for Alexa describe people, places, and things, its good fun.

You don’t have to memorize long lists of commands, as Alexa will walk you through situations and query you for your action responses. One unfortunate thing is that its not Echo Show friendly, i.e., its not been developed to show scenes or items on the screen while the story progresses. That would have been a nice addition and maybe something to hope for in later versions.

Where to get it: You can locate the Skyrim Very Special Edition Skill in the Amazon Alexa app, enable it using your voice, or use the following web link: Skyrim Very Special Edition

Alexa is available for Amazon devices Echo, Echo 2, Dot, Tap, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Look, Echo Connect, Dash Wand, Amazon Cloud Cam, Fire tablets, and Fire TV, Amazon Fire TV Edition TVs, in the Music app, but also on iOS, Android, and the web with Reverb.ai.
