This question actually comes up quite a bit. The Tap device is probably the better Alexa device of all the ones that Amazon sells. However, the Tap is unsupported for the recently added calling and messaging features. In fact, you can check yourself. If you own a Tap, ask Alexa to call someone and you’ll get this message:
“Calling with Alexa is not supported on this device“
I’ve asked and there’s no functional reason to keep the Tap from working, just that Amazon is not supporting it right now. Support for it may come in the future with an update, much like the voice wake feature came along a few months after the Tap released.
