Alexa FAQ: Can I Just Turn an Existing Tablet into a DIY Echo Show?

After Amazon announced its new Echo Show device, many were determined to take the updated Alexa app and an existing tablet and create their own DIY Echo Show. While that can work in some cases, you need to be aware of a caveat and a limitation…

Unless a cellular signal is present in the device, the call/messaging icon doesn’t even show up in the app. i.e., the tablet would need its own phone number and cellular service.

The Alexa app does not currently support video calls.

Bottom line is that if you want video calling and full Internet telephony, you’re still better off just using Skype or FaceTime on a tablet.
