Microsoft Delivering a Last Minute CU for Windows 10 1709

Microsoft couldn’t just let the month run out without delivering yet another cumulative update this month. Today, the company has pushed out KB4058258 (OS Build 16299.214) which happens to be the third this month. The latest update attempts to resolve the following problems: Addresses a compatibility issue where colors are distorted when the system is connected to displays that support wide color gamut. Addresses a condition where a second monitor that is connected to legacy AMD display adapters flashes after waking from sleep. iHome Scrambling to Fix Lingering Customers Problems After Cloud Outage

What do you do when the cloud goes down and your smart home goes offline? That’s yet another pitfall of connecting everything to the Internet. iHome’s cloud service that supplies communication to its smart home products went down this past Friday. The service was out from about 10:00am EST to 3:30pm EST. But, while the company’s services recovered in less than 6 hours, customers devices continued to have problems reconnecting to the restored service. Alexa-Cortana Partnership Getting Closer or Now Non-existent?

Last year Microsoft and Amazon announced that the companies would work together to bring Cortana functionality to Alexa and vice-versa. Amazon Adds SMS Texting for Alexa for Android Smartphone Users

Amazon today has unwrapped  a surprising new feature for Android users of the Alexa mobile app. Now, users can configure Alexa to allow text messaging and Alexa will use the capability of the smartphone to send messages through the SMS network to those contained in personal contacts. Just say… “Alexa, send a text to <name>“ If you’ve yet to enable this function, Alexa will respond… “If you have an Android phone, go to the Alexa app to enable sending SMS messages using your Alexa devices.“ You can turn it on by going to the Conversations tab in the app and then Contacts > My Profile > Send SMS. Windows 10 Version 1709 Tricks Web Apps into Not Working

Microsoft has identified a problem with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and certain web apps where they won’t work and will produce a HTTP Error 503. The cause is a simple one, but overlooked by those testing Fall Creators Update before it was approved. Essentially, the Windows Activation Service is looking for a folder full of files that do not exist. The details are the cause are told in KB4050891. The fix is to stop the Windows Activation Service and remove the folder completely before starting it up again. Alexa Tip: Using an Echo Device as a Fire TV Speaker

This is really just the result of a “because you can” Alexa tip, not that the results are spectacular. But, did you know you can use your Echo device to supply audio for your Fire TV? I’m sure in certain situations, this might make sense – but normally the TV that the Fire TV is hooked to probably has the better, more optimum audio output. However, all you need to do is put both the Fire TV and Echo devices into Bluetooth pairing mode to find each other and sure enough, the Echo becomes a TV speaker. To set this up, you have to To put Fire TV and the Echo device in Bluetooth discovery mode: Select Settings > Controllers and Bluetooth Devices > Other Bluetooth Devices from the Fire TV menu.
