Microsoft Admits Office is Now Available for Chromebooks But Isn’t Quite Ready

This past week Office 365 became available for use on Chromebooks. There wasn’t an announcement. It just so happened someone, somewhere tried it and it worked when it didn’t before. Now, Microsoft has finally admitted that it was intentional, though the announcement is buried in a much larger block of news and seemingly downplayed. Additionally, the company also suggests that its really not quite ready… Office Mobile apps on Chromebook—Earlier this week, we released a preview of the Office Mobile apps for Google Chromebooks. These apps were originally designed for Android phones, and they’re not yet fully optimized for the Chromebook form factor. We’ve done some initial work on the end user experience and want to gather customer feedback. As with all of our mobile apps, a...

Fire TV Adds More Voice Control Over Hulu, CBS, and Others

Not too long ago, Amazon promised more voice control capability over the video apps customers install on their Fire TV devices. The enhanced functionality would be made possible by the updated Video Skills kit. Today more of that promise has become reality.  Apps for Bravo, CBS, Hulu, NBC, SHOWTIME, and Sony PlayStation Vue today can be voice controlled using Alexa. For Hulu, in addition to accepting Alexa commands for streaming content, voice commands also work with its live TV service. For example, asking Alexa to change channels will work. Things to try: Bravo “Alexa, play Below Deck.” “Alexa, watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” CBS All Access “Alexa, play Star Trek Discovery on CBS All Access.” “Alexa, play Young Sheldon.” “Alexa, watch 60 Minutes.” Hulu “Alexa, watch The Handmaid’s...

Amazon Includes Device and User Provisioning for IT Pros in Alexa for Business

Device deployment is a huge task for IT Pros.  New and refreshed PCs are in constant demand and strict policies and procedures have been put in place to ensure the devices meet corporate guidelines. In many organizations, OS deployment and hardware provisioning is a full time job and there are even week-long in-person training courses and a constant supply of conference sessions to provide IT Pros with the necessary tools to learn this job and improve on it. So, its an important task. At re:Invent 2017, Amazon announced that it is unveiling Alexa for Business. From an end-user perspective, Alexa will be capable of responding to commands for things like dialing contacts, joining con-calls, scheduling board rooms, checking diaries, arranging travel, and a myriad of other common tasks. Amazon Launches its Own Time Sync Service to Control Time

Amazon has made a long list of announcements at its re:Invent 2017 conference this week and there’s more to come. The company controls many different industries already, so why not control time, too? Time servers are a valuable piece of technology, ensuring a uniform platform across an organization – particularly multi-national organizations. And, if the PC time isn’t set right, some software, services, and other functions either don’t work at all, or don’t work correctly. And, if the clock is even slightly off (informally known as ‘leap seconds’), strange things can occur. Amazon has now rolled out its own time service at no charge and is immediately available in all public AWS regions to all instances running in a VPC. The new Amazon Time Sync Se...

Apple’s Security Fix for macOS High Sierra Breaks File Sharing

In the rush to get a fix out for a potentially dangerous vulnerability in macOS High Sierra, Apple broke file sharing. Fortunately, though, the company is aware of the issue and has already supplied a fix. The fix is a workaround and a new patch is not needed. As we noted earlier, macOS Sierra has a security bug that’s less about a missed security hold during an audit and really more about Apple being irresponsible. Full details: About the security content of Security Update 2017-001 Available for: macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 Not impacted: macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and earlier Impact: An attacker may be able to bypass administrator authentication without supplying the administrator’s password Description: A logic error existed in the validation of credentials. Microsoft Extends Classic Azure Portal Retirement to January

The classic Azure Portal was originally scheduled to be shutdown on November 30, 2017, but Microsoft has had a change of heart, it seems. The company today has announced it is extending the deadline to Monday, January 8, 2018. The reason for the extension is ultimately unclear, but in the same breath as announcing the new deadline, the company also introduces new tools in the new portal to help customers migrate policies between the old and new versions. You can make your own assumptions based on that.   Looking for an awesome, no-nonsense technical conference for IT Pros, Developers, and DevOps? Echo Show Tip: Hard Reset Using Buttons

I’ve seen, heard, and read about instances where, for some odd reason, someone will purchase and receive an Echo Show, but it will need to be factory reset before it can be configured – or even recognized in the Alexa app. There’s options in the on-screen settings menu to reset the device, but if the device isn’t setup yet, those options aren’t available. To do a hard reset using just the available buttons, use this combination: Hold down the microphone and volume down buttons until the Echo Show reboots.
