How to Setup Report Caching for a SSRS Report

By Garth Jones Some of the reporting questions that I get asked have to do with the burden reporting puts on servers and how this can be reduced or controlled. In general, the burden for most reports and organizations is minimal as reporting is generally an underused feature. However, if your company uses reporting a lot and you have concerns about the CPU and disk load on your SSRS server, then SSRS report caching is a great feature that will reduce both disk and CPU I/O on your SSRS server. Caching allows you to keep a copy of a previously run report and display it again without updating the results. This can be useful for reducing the load on your SSRS and SQL servers when you know that end users are likely to run a report over and over and over again. Based on my experience, Software U...

How to Subscribe to Configuration Manager Reports Using Office 365

By Garth Jones One of the most important things that you can do to make your Manager or security team happy is to setup a rule to automatically email them status reports. This will allow them to see reports about patch management or compliance settings, for example, on a regular basis. Using Office 365, however, presented a unique challenge because SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) requires a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) connection to the email server. And, in order to use a SMTP connection, Office 365 required the authentication of a user’s account and you couldn’t authenticate an account with SSRS. All of that changed with the release of SQL Server 2016 SSRS. Now you can add a username and password to connect to your SMTP server settings. Start by opening Reporting Services Co...

How to Rename a Windows Server When SQL Server and WSUS Are Already Installed

By Garth Jones Not long ago, as I described in a blog post last week, I rebuilt my System Center Configuration Manager Current Branch Technical Preview (ConfigMgr CB TP) lab. In order to rebuild my lab, I re-used an existing server with both SQL Server 2012 and ConfigMgr CB TP 1608 installed. My first step was to uninstall ConfigMgr CB TP 1608. Next, I changed the host name of the Windows Server from CM1608 to CMTP. I know that problems can arise when you rename the host server AFTER SQL is installed (which was the case in my lab), however, there are a few easy steps you can take which will prompt SQL to accept the new host name. Keep in mind that I’m writing this blog post AFTER I fixed everything, so I will not be showing you the before screenshots. Once the Windows Server is renamed and...
