Installation Guide to Ola Hallengren’s SQL Server Maintenance Solution

By Garth Jones SQL Server performance is one of the biggest items that will affect ConfigMgr’s performance, so when you ask for help about ConfigMgr’s performance, you will almost always be pointed to Ola Hallengren’s SQL Server Maintenance Solution. Many ConfigMgr administrators, however, are NOT SQL Server experts, so how do you install this solution? This blog post will answer that question. 1. Start by reviewing Ola’s blog post. 2. Next, download the MaintenanceSolution.sql from the blog post link. Since it is a SQL script, it might get blocked by AV software. Keep an eye out for that. 3. Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), connect to your SQL Server and open the MaintenanceSolution.sql file that you just downloaded. The first thing you will notice is that Ola keeps the script up...

Quick Tip: Using Bing to Search Microsoft’s Docs Site

Microsoft’s new Docs site ( is an awesome foray into improving the company’s product documentation. But, say you want to use Bing to search specific areas/products of the Docs site. Here’s how to do it… Locate the product topic you want to search within and then use: site:<url> <search parameter> For example, the following delivers results about Private Key in Dynamics 365: primary key Some of the product areas aren’t as easy to determine, so you’ll have to dig around a bit. For example, the System Center Configuration Manager area doesn’t actually have its own promoted section yet, but you can still search the product area using the following:

Quick Tip: Keeping Track of Microsoft Intune Updates

Microsoft updates its cloud-based management product, Intune, at least once a month. With this steady update cadence it can be difficult to determine the new features that can be taken advantage of. In its new Docs web site ( Microsoft has developed an entire section for Intune, but also a couple specific pages to help keep track of Intune feature additions, improvements, enhancements, and bug fixes. Each month, when updates are available, the “What’s New” page will be updated to show the most current additions… Microsoft Intune “What’s New” page: Microsoft also maintains an update archive page. When the “What’s New” page is u...

How to Enable the ConfigMgr Rebuild Indexes Site Maintenance Task

By Garth Jones I’ve noticed that not many people have enabled the Rebuild Indexes site maintenance task. ConfigMgr administrators are either unaware that this site maintenance task isn’t enabled by default, or do not understand the importance of this task. The reason it is an important task to run on your ConfigMgr site server is because it allows you to get the most out of SQL Server when it is being queried by the ConfigMgr console, reports, collections, etc. For more details about SQL indexing see my blog post entitled, “Why is SQL Server Indexing Important?” By the way, I think this task should be enabled by default, but that’s another story. To enable this task, open the ConfigMgr Console and select the Administration bar. Next, expand the Site Configuration node and then select Sites...

KB3159706 is the Update that Enables Windows 10 Feature Updates for WSUS

In the patching communities this question comes up quite a bit, so its worth having it recorded so its easy to find. Q: Which update is the one I need to apply to enable WSUS to deploy Feature Updates for Windows 10? A: KB3159706.  You must install this update on any WSUS server that is intended to sync and distribute Windows 10 upgrades (and feature updates) that are released after May 1, 2016. Without this update applied to Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, WSUS 4.0 will only be able to deploy quality updates. The actual update enables ESD decryption provision in WSUS in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. NOTE: This update is only for those running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2. WSUS 4.0 running on Windows Server 2016 already contains the extra c...
