Hotfix Available: Service windows are deleted in System Center Configuration Manager 1511

When a service window is created on one site in a System Center Configuration Manager hierarchy, service windows on all other sites in the hierarchy are deleted. For example, after you create a service window for the Central Administration Site (CAS), a new service window is created for the child primary site. But after this second service window is created, the first service window that you created for CAS is automatically deleted. After you install this hotfix, each site can have its own service window. However, previously deleted service windows will not be restored. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3142341

Solving One of My Pet Peeves!

By Garth Jones I truly dislike how Windows 10 handles the system tray icons. Why don’t I like it? Well that’s simple, Windows 10 has a habit of hiding all my notices! It’s not until I expand the system tray that I can see notices on hidden items. Instead of taking care of action items right away, I have to remember to expand the system tray first. Below is a screenshot of my expanded system tray and you’ll see that there are two icons with notices (red arrows). How do you fix this? After doing some digging, I discovered that in Windows 10 there were some minor changes to the location of where to turn on all system tray icons, however, it’s an easy fix. All you have to do is right-click on the system tray icon location and select Properties. Next, select the Customize… button. Then click on...

Time-Saving Tip for RBA Security Roles

By Garth Jones I needed to create a number of Role-Based Administration (RBA) report reader security roles in order to test each ConfigMgr feature and function. This was done to ensure that only the appropriate reports would be available to the assigned users. Since there are no security roles for this task, it meant that I needed to continually clone the Read-only Analyst security role to remove all the extra rights. This became a tedious task and I knew that there had to be a better way to achieve my goal. The answer was simple, create a base ConfigMgr security role with the following access rights: Site: Read, Collection: Read and Read Resource. To do this I simply cloned the Read-only Analyst security role and removed all the extra rights. I then called it, “zzz Base Security Role,” so...

A 5 Minute Walkthrough of the New Features in Configuration Manager

This is probably one of the most thorough and concise overviews of the new features in the latest version of System Center Configuration Manager. Enjoy!

The Importance of Prompt Formatting in ConfigMgr Reporting

By Garth Jones I was working on a report created by someone else. Everything was going along smoothly until I received the following error message: “An error occurred during local report processing. An unexpected error occurred in Report Processing. Input string was not in correct format.” To make sure that I didn’t miss anything I re-tested the dataset and I received the expected results. What could the error mean? The key to me was the word, “format,” so I checked out the Reporting Parameters page. While there I noticed that the Data type (red arrow) for the prompt was set to Integer. Simply by changing the data type to String solved my problem. This is an example of the little things that will cause headaches when you update reports, so watch your prompt formats.

New Developments in Application Virtualization with Microsoft App-V 5.1

Application virtualization is now mainstream.  Driven by the need to simplify application management and to run applications across different devices, IT organizations are turning to solutions like Microsoft App-V, VMware® Thin App™, and Symantec Workspace Virtualization.  In turn those vendors are adding more capabilities and embedding their technologies. Recently Flexera Software hosted a webinar Best Practices for Application Virtualization, with App-V expert, Steven Thomas, also known as the @Madvirtualizer, a long time Microsoft employee and author of the GLADIATOR@MSFT bog.  Steven provide some great background on the changes included with the App-V 5 SP3 and went into detail on the changes that App-V 5.1 brings to the table. In the latest release of App-V, he covered three main area...
