ConfigMgr: Identifying Win10 Credential Guard Hardware Requirements

HP-InstrumentedBIOS  – OMCI_SMS_DEF – TPM Using Microsoft Windows 10 (Enterprise), organizations can now take advantage of a new technology called Credential Guard, which isolates certain types of sensitive data so that only privileged system software can access it. As a result, credential theft attacks (Pass-the-Hash, Pass-The-Ticket, etc.) are prevented by protecting NTLM password hashes and Kerberos Ticket Granting Tickets. While Credential Guard is an effective way to protect against these types of attacks, it comes with a set of specific hardware requirements that must be met in order to implement this new technology. The sections below describe just one scenario for how to use System Center Configuration Manager (2012 or current branch) to identify which systems support/d...

ConfigMgr Current branch (version 1602) Now Provides Office 365 Update Management

According to Microsoft, one of the top feature requests from customers has been to be able to use System Center Configuration Manager to update Office. Of course, ConfigMgr has always been able to update Office, but it’s never been an easy task. In Current Branch version 1602, Microsoft has sought to streamline the ongoing update management for Office 365 clients. Through deeper integration between ConfigMgr and the Microsoft Update service, the combined workflow tools allow for a consistent process to discover, view, deploy and track available software updates. To use this new functionality, you must install the 1602 update.   Resources: TechNet: Manage Office 365 ProPlus updates with System Center Configuration Manager YouTube: But, wait…there’s probably more… Foll...

How to Create a VM for Android 4.4 R5

By Garth Jones Over four blog posts, I will show you how to create an Android virtual machine (VM) and provide you with some helpful tips. You can use an Android VM to test Intune stand-alone, ConfigMgr hybrid or Mobile Application Management (MAM). Currently Android is the only one that will work with Hyper-V or VMware server. I find it extremely useful to use a VM instead of a physical device to do testing because you can create as many VMs as you want without any extra cost. In this first part, I will show you how to create the VM itself without installing Android. I know this might seem like an easy task, and it is, as long as you remember that you MUST use Hyper-V Generation 1. First, starting within the Hyper-V Manager start by clicking on New and then Virtual Machine… Next, name you...

Come Join me at the Midwest Management Summit

The Midwest Management Summit, owned and operated by the Minnesota System Center User Group, is a fantastic community event for those working with System Center. If you regularly work with System Center, PowerShell, and SQL Server this is an event that delivers over 100 sessions at a 10-foot view. Attending 3 days of sessions will literally make your head hurt. But, that’s a good thing. The Midwest Management Summit is held at the Mall of America in Minnesota. And, believe it or not, this happens to be a fantastic location for the event, offering easy access to food and after-hours activities. I attended this past year and had the most fun hanging out with friends for dinner, visiting the Microsoft and Apple Stores (they are right across from each other), and riding the roller coaster that...

Reporting Services Point Verification Error

By Garth Jones When you setup your SSRS reporting services point for ConfigMgr, you need to verify the database details. After clicking the verify button (green arrow) you may get an error (red arrow). What do you do? Hover over the error icon to see the actual error message. The error message will look similar to the following screenshot, and it reads: Connection Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed while attempting to consume the pre-login handshake acknowledgement. This could be because the pre-login handshake failed or the server was unable to respond back in time. The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was – [Pre-Login] initialization=21016; handshake=6; In our case we determined that it was a firewall issue and opened the SQL ports. If you think you have...

Who Pushed the ConfigMgr Client?

By Garth Jones Recently someone asked me if you could determine who pushed out a ConfigMgr client. I wasn’t sure if you could get this information from status messages or not, but it turns out that you can. Notice within the screenshot below that the first line with Message ID 30108, shows that I pushed the client to a computer. The second line with Message ID 30107, shows that I pushed the client to a collection of computers. With the user information in the description section I can determine who pushed the client to a specific computer.
