How to Import a RBA Security Role

By Garth Jones Knowing how to import a Role-Based Administration (RBA) security role from one ConfigMgr site to another will allow you to use security roles from other sites. This is a useful technique to know because it allows you to create an RBA role within a development environment and then import it to your production environment. It also allows you to import RBA security roles that are freely available on the internet, such as Enhansoft’s Report Reader tool. Although this blog post is written using ConfigMgr Current Branch, all of these steps apply to ConfigMgr 2012/R2. Start within the ConfigMgr console and locate the Security Roles node, right-click on it and select Import Security Role. Locate the xml file that you want to import and click Open. With that last step, you have impor...

SQL Query Troubleshooting Tip

By Garth Jones Before starting to write a SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) report, you need to create a SQL query that will be used within the report and I always recommend that you create your query within SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). How do you troubleshoot queries when you get an error? When you use SSMS, it is fairly easy to troubleshoot query issues because SSMS will provide you with information about the error. Take the following example. You’ll notice that SSMS tells me there is a syntax error and it is found on Line 5. You might ask, “Which line is Line 5?” Notice that the red arrow in the screenshot below is pointing to my cursor. Now see that the black arrow is telling me that I’m on Line 2. Given this information, I know that a few more lines down will be the incorre...

SQL Agent Service is Not Running

By Garth Jones I was testing out a new SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) report for a client and everything was working great. Before finishing the project, I needed to set-up their email report subscription. Once I clicked OK to apply the subscription, I received this error: The SQL Agent service is not running. This operation requires the SQL Agent service. (rsSchedulerNotResponding). How did I enable the SQL Agent service? Following SQL Server best practices, I used the SQL Server Configuration Manager utility. In this case the service was set to start-up manually, so I needed to change the start mode to automatic. There are no tricks to this, just right-click on the service name, select Properties, and then select the Service tab. After changing the Start Mode to Automatic, I clicke...

ConfigMgr CB (Software Updates) – Run WSUS Cleanup Wizard Setting (behind the scenes)

When an administrator, using Configuration Manager current branch, checks the box for the Run WSUS cleanup wizard setting in the SUP component’s properties (Supersedence Rules tab), it sets the Call WSUS Cleanup property for the WsyncMgr component to 1 (SC_Component_Property table). The frequency for this setting is 30 days. There are also a couple of registry values for the WSyncMgr component that get stored in the SMS\Component\SMS_WSUS_SYNC_MANAGER key. These values are WSUSCleanUpWizardInterval and LastWSUSCleanWizardRunTime. Applicable sample section of the wsyncmgr.log: _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WSUS Cleanup interval is : 30 days and time since last WSUS Cleanup run is 13244 days. ...

Query for High-Priority Software Updates

By Garth Jones The other day I was helping someone within the forums locate high-priority software updates. I thought others would find this information useful too, so here are the how-to steps. By the way, I’m using ConfigMgr Current Branch in my example, but the steps are essentially the same for ConfigMgr 2012/R2 and 2007. Start by opening the ConfigMgr console and browse to the All Software Updates node. Click the Add Criteria link (blue arrow). Select the Severity check box and then click the Add button. Click the Important link and change it to Critical. Add any other criteria that you require, and then click the Search button.   Review the search results prior to deploying these software updates to client computers.
