Community Solution: FEP 2010 install breaks ConfigMgr backups

Ken West posted this little gem on the ConfigMgr email list today, and it’s worth posting here for the folks that run into the same issue. This occurred with Legato Network backing up the backups produced by the SCCM backup task.  The error was: ERROR: VSS failed to initialize for directives, error=0x80042308: The specified object does not exist. 7154:save: Unable to set up VSS filesystem directives. Failed to back up E:\workspace. The resolution for this is: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2570654 I’m posting this because it might save someone some time troubleshooting.  Don’t know if a FEP install will cause this issue with SCCM backups in general or just with specific products. Here’s the link: myITforum Bug reports, Suggestions and Comments This way you can also track what folks have posted along with tracking our progress on the bugs, suggestions, and comments.

Configuration Manager 2012 Community Evaluation Program Webcast Recap–Remote Control

I’ve been away working for a while on projects but I have some free time to jump back and post several blogs on myITForum 3.0.  The following is a recap of my notes from the Remote Control presentation given on October 19th. – Presenter: Eric Orman – Technet documentation covering Remote Control in ConfigMgr 2012 is located here. – Why change again? Primary goal is to: Regain the functionality that was lost with the standard ConfigMgr 2007 implementation Most field admins I know brought the rc/remote.exe forward and dropped it into their CM 2007 sites Achieve parity with existing CM 2007 features – What’s new in RC Ability to send Ctrl-Alt-Del keystroke to host device Switch users during an active session Control a locked desktop Access the Secure Desktop Abili...

ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 Status Message Documentation

!!!! UPDATE !!!! I’ve created a table and view containing this data so you can use it in your reports without having to look up what messageIDs like 11708 means. That article can be found HERE. !!!! UPDATE2 !!!! The original Excel spreadsheet said that %1 corresponds to InsStrValue = 1 and %2 corresponds to InsStrValue = 2, etc…however, because that index field is 0-based, %1 actually corresponds to InsStrValue = 0 and %2 corresponds to InsStrValue = 1, etc. That should be fixed on v2 of the workbook. I was graciously given access to some raw data for Config Manager involving the status messages and I’ve put together a spreadsheet similar to the one Microsoft provides for SMS 2003 HERE that shows the status MessageIDs and the corresponding descriptions. This downloadable ...

SQL Function – udf_ConvertBytes – Converts any Byte-based unit of measure to any other Byte-based unit of measure (Bytes, MB, GB, TB, PB, EB, ZB, YB, BB, GeopBytes)

However, I’ve been getting a lot of people reading that who were actually looking for a function to convert between any two byte-based units of measure like Gigabytes to Terabytes or Yottabytes to Bytes, etc. for those times when the output needed to be in a specific UOM. Well, I’ve gotten enough requests for this that I decided to make my own function which will convert between any two byte-based units of measure for those people that must have the output in a certain UOM, or just want to know how many bytes in a Geopbyte. OVERVIEW Essentially, the process goes like this: Using some sort of lookup table or giant CASE statement (eew), find out how many bytes are in the input UOM (example: GB = 1073741824) and use that number as a multiplier in the next step Convert the input nu...

WQL – Using the bracket wildcard to match a range of version numbers (MNSCUG)

At the Minneapolis area System Center User Group meeting last night, I mentioned the notion of using LIKE and the bracket wildcard [] to match a range of version numbers (which incidentally works for versions, IP Addresses, IP Subnets, etc.) instead of using greater than or less than because of the way WQL/SQL does a dictionary sort, not a numerical sort. I mentioned that I had written an article describing how to do that, but that it was embedded in a broader article on something else. Otherwise, here’s the relevant excerpt from that article: ——————————————————— What we’re trying to do is find REPDRVFS.DLL with versions like 5.1.2600.3138% 5.2.3790.2936% 5.2.3790.4...

M@d Skillz – Use data outside the SMS DB in your SMS Web Reports

OVERVIEW (note: this is written with SMS 2003 & SQL 2005 in mind because that’s the environment I’m in right now, but I believe if the equivalent work was done in SCCM or in SQL 2000, the outcome would be the same…just a hunch) If you’re like any normal SMS administrator, you’ve played around with SMS web reports and started getting some pretty useful data out of your SMS database. The addition of web reports to SMS was quite a great addition because it really made rolling your own reports a LOT easier than doing custom ASP/ASP.NET for each bloomin’ report or creating a new Excel spreadsheet everytime someone wanted different data. If you’re in the same boat as me, as soon as people at work start getting good SMS data out of SMS, they start ask...
