Simply put, Software Asset Management or SAM is a set of processes and tools utilized by a team of people to manage, control and protect a company’s software assets. It seems like a simple concept, but it’s actually a very complex part of a broader business discipline called IT Asset Management or ITAM.
My organization has recently given me a challenge. I have been assigned to a newly-formed team to implement SAM, based on the 27 ISO-19770 processes. For now, this blog will be primarily focused on my new journey with SAM. Hopefully my postings will help others in the IT community to become more familiar with SAM. Like most folks working in the IT sector, I was totally unaware that SAM was such an established standard. Although, it’s been in place for over 6 years. If you are new to SAM this Wiki is a good place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_asset_management.
