Each week, we take a look at new and important Alexa skills you might want to consider enabling for your Alexa device. Amazon continues to improve Alexa with its own updates, but skills are software components that allow Alexa users to extend functionality across all Alexa-enabled devices in use for very specific functions.
This week’s skill: Chat Bot for Slack
Description: Slack is a hugely popular communication app for many. It’s so popular, Microsoft has been working hard to develop a competitor before the market is complete gone. Slack is a mixture between email, old NNTP news servers, old AOL chat rooms, and instant messaging. Slack is currently being utilized by consumers and business alike – and in a lot of areas replacing web-based forums for technical community support. Chat Bot for Slack is an Alexa skill that links the Slack account to Alexa so users can use voice to post quick communications to specific Slack channels.
Real world use: For those companies that use Slack consistently, there’s a lot of value here. For example, you could create a special support channel for your organization to deliver notifications to all employees. Say something like: “Alexa, tell Chat Bot I want to post ‘The email server is down, we’re working on it’ to the #support channel.” There’s a lot of cool applications here and its only limited by imagination and your abilities with Slack.

Incidentally, the reviews for this skill aren’t great with a few users suggesting they can’t get the linking between Slack and Alexa to work. Honestly…I’ve not had that problem and this skill has only worked perfectly for me. YMMV
