ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Upgrade – Automatic Client Upgrade Unavailable

After upgrading a ConfigMgr 2012 site to the R2 release, you may find that the options for Automatic Client Upgrade are greyed out:

This option can be accessed by going to the Administration workspace, navigating to Site Configuration > Sites, clicking on the ConfigMgr site and selecting Hierarchy Settings:

Given the fact that client upgrades are often part of a site upgrade process, this feature is definitely a key one to have enabled. This issue was also seen with the ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 upgrade, and Kent Agerlund posted a quick resolution (involving Security Scopes) to re-enable the functionality.

Once enabled, the clients should download and schedule the updated client install:
