i’ve been using my laptop to do demos, etc…but it was not enough and i was always struggling with power, speed, etc…and i decided to buy a desktop (well, if we can call it a desktop
)
it has been a while since I bought parts for a pc (by while i mean 6+ years) and i did not know what models, etc i should buy.
this is because things change a lot, one day X is the best motherboard, another day Y is the best..and we never know…
anyway…i used Rob’s post about his new pc build (http://wmug.co.uk/wmug/b/r0b/archive/2012/08/01/built-a-new-pc.aspx) but i did some changes…
1st of all, i want a machine that i can run a lot of vm’s without thinking about performance issue and i also want run 2 environments (lab and production – yes, i’ll be running my small business email, webpage and system center to monitor/manage it as well my family computers)
based on this, i selected the following components:
1x Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor – Retail
1x Asus Rampage IV Extreme Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
2x GeIL EVO Veloce Frost White 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit (GEW332GB2400C11AQC)
1x BitFenix Shinobi XL Full Tower Gaming Case – Black
1x Asus VS228H 22″ Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor – Black
5x Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid SATA-II 2.5″ 7200RPM 32MB
1x Seasonic G series 550w ’80 Plus Gold’ Modular Power Supply
2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache – OEM (ST2000DM001)
1x Noctua NH-D14-2011 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler with PWM Fans (Socket LGA2011)
1x Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 (B2M-00008)
1x Gainward GeForce 8400GS “SILENT” 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
As you can see, this is not a gamer PC, it will be my server PC, 6 cores i7, 64gb and lots of disk. As i have already an SSD on my laptop, i’ll use it for boot, the 2TB sata barracuda are for backup and the other 5 disks are for vm’s…
as i want lots of disk space and did not have lots of money to spend…i bought hybrid disks instead of ssd, lets see how they will work out…
my idea is to install WS2012 and user hyper-v to do it…
i’ll create another blog post once the parts arrive…and lots of posts of my lab creation…
