Personally, I’ve never been a Gmail person despite having and using a @gmail.com account for all my Android devices (smartphone, tablets), so I didn’t have to “upgrade”.  However, I *have* used Gmail before, and now after using Outlook.com, I have to say, it’s a much better experience.  Again, I’ve never been an indebted Gmail user, so for those that are, I’m sure your experience could be different.

But, I have been a Hotmail user – specifically using the Microsoft Outlook (desktop client) connector.  And, so far, Outlook.com is a clear winner over Hotmail, simply due to the Spam features.  Hotmail is/was a sponge for Spam.  Outlook.com works much better on a touch device (tablet, smartphone), too.
