Tutorial: How to use DCM in SCCM 2012 – Part 1. Creating a Configuration Item

I’ve been playing around with configuration items and baselines in SCCM 2012 on my demo kit and thought I’d do a quick and dirty tutorial for those who want to use DCM for 2012.

Open up the console and make sure you are in the assets and compliance tab.

Expand the Compliance Settings node and right-click on Configuration Items. Click Create Configuration Item.

In the CI Wizard, fill in the Name and optionally the description and category then click next. In this example I am going to create a CI that shows file extensions on all machines I deploy my configuration item/baseline I deploy this to by using the registry.

Select the OSes you want this CI to be applicable to and then click Next.

Now you will land on the Specify settings for this operating system page, this is where you will configure your CI to do what you want. Click New to create one.

You can fill in the fields manually but for ease we can click the Browse button and locate the registry hive we want to manage. The hive we are looking for is HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\HideFileExt

Now to make sure this item is managed, click on the Compliance rules tab. This is where you tell your SCCM what to do when it checks your CI. We can see there is already an existing rule to make sure that this registry key must exist. We want to make sure that the file extensions are displayed on all the machines this rule is deployed to. Click New.

Click Ok and the OK again after confirming your Compliance Rules.

Click Next and Next again until you reach the summary page. Confirm your CI and click Next. After the progress has completed you will have created your first Configuration Item! Click close to close the wizard.

I’ll post up another blog on how to create a Configuration Baseline so you can add in your newly created Configuration Item and then we can deploy the baseline to your collections.
