This update adds new software titles and several additional updates to the Asset Intelligence catalog without modifying any custom Asset Intelligence catalog information.

Important: Installation of this update is not supported for System Center Configuration Manager 2007 installations with a service pack applied because SMS 2003 and Configuration Manager 2007 with no service pack have a different data base schema. This update will not change any of the customer customizations in the data base. This update will not bring the product to a Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 functional level.

Instructions

This update can be installed either on the SMS 2003 SP3 or Configuration Manager 2007 site server computer or on a remote client computer. Please note that installation instructions are different depending on the installation location.

Before beginning update installation, ensure that the user account you are logged in with has administrative privileges on the SQL Server instance installation used to host the site database and that the computer the update is being started on has the Bulk Copy Program (BCP) installed. The BCP is installed with SQL Server client tools.

HOW TO USE:
To install the update on the local SMS 2003 SP3 or Configuration Manager 2007 site server computer, copy the update Windows Installer package to the local computer and use the following command line:
msiexec /I AICU_072009.msi /Log logfilename [SQLSERVER=Sql Server Name SITEDB=DB Name] [TARGETDIR=InstallDir]

To install the update on a client computer, copy the update Windows Installer package to the local computer and use the following command line: msiexec /I AICU_072009.msi /Log logfilename [SQLSERVER=Sql Server Name SITEDB=DB Name] [TARGETDIR=InstallDir]

Note: Do not use quotes or braces around the SQL Server name or database name.

This multi-day engagement uses a number of tools to collect data and statistics of the most important and critical aspects of your SMS environment. The goal of this health check is to proactively diagnose and analyze the data collected, provide recommendations based on best practices and therefore help your organization avoid SMS-related problems in the future. The tools used are passive and only collect information about SMS, SQL, and Active Directory. The tools act in a read only manner and do not make changes to your servers. The health check data gathering is performed onsite. Data analysis may be completed post-visit. Documentation, reports, and prescriptive guidance are provided to your staff based on the findings. Follow up days are available upon request.

SMS Installer with Installer Step-up Utility

With Microsoft® Systems Management Server, organizations can reduce administrative overhead by automating distribution and installation of any 16-bit or 32-bit application or operating system. Many software applications need manual intervention during installation, making them poorly suited for electronic software distribution. Systems Management Server Installer eliminates the need for manual intervention.

Note: This download is available for the Intel platform only.

What Systems Management Server Installer Does

The Systems Management Server Installer features an Installation Expert that repackages one or more software applications into a single package for Systems Management Server to distribute and install automatically. The Installation Expert automatically creates the instructions and event-generation scripts that Systems Management Server uses to deploy software, install applications, and monitor the installation process.

Windows Installer Step-up Utility

Systems Management Server Installer includes the Windows Installer Step-up Utility (ISU). ISU includes a command-line tool that migrates setup packages from the Systems Management Server Installer format to the Microsoft Windows Installer format, resulting in a Windows Installer setup package with an .msi file name extension. The setup package can be run on computers that support the Windows Installer service.

Systems Management Server Installer also supports previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer scripts and packages. This download also includes a command-line feature (Isu.exe)

Key Features

SMS Installer with Installer Step-up Utility

Feature

Description

Installation Repackaging

You can combine one or more existing application installations into a single self-extracting package, suitable for automated distribution by Systems Management Server. As Systems Management Server deploys this package, it automatically detects and uses local computer configuration settings. Built-in intelligence also ensures that only required files are deployed on each computer.

Software Updating Capabilities

Software updating can greatly reduce the size of distributed files as only the actual file changes are incorporated into the installation.

Security

You can digitally sign all repackaged software to confirm the legitimacy of its origin.

Test Run & Uninstall Support

You can test an installation before deploying it by running Installer-generated files in test mode. If for any reason the actual rollout needs to be recalled, computers can be restored to the same state they were in before the distributed software was installed.

Extract Support

You can extract executable files created with previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer without needing a reference computer to build the package.

Convert Support

You can convert executable files created with previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer to Windows Installer (MSI) format.

Compile As .msi Support

You can compile a Windows Installer package (.msi) directly from the Systems Management Server Installer console.

The self-extracting executable file on this page contains a 32-bit version of Microsoft Systems Management Server Installer. To install this tool, run the 32-bit self-extracting executable (.exe) file on a Systems Management Server 2.0 or Systems Management Server 2003 primary site server.

After Installer verifies that your computer is a Systems Management Server site server, it then copies the installation files to the selected directory (by default, the SMS Installer Files directory).

Note: The Systems Management Server Installer with Installer Step-up:

•

Is not supported on Systems Management Server 1.2.

TIP: How to install SMS Installer on a workstation without an existing SMS server: http://www.myitforum.com/articles/12/view.asp?id=174
