Clarification of Win 7 support and ConfigMgr 2007

There has been a fair amount of discussion lately regarding Win 7, Server 2008 R2 and support by ConfigMgr 2007. Jeff Wettlaufer clears up the confusion in his recent blog entry.  The primary recommendation for Win 7 support is to use ConfigMgr SP2, set to release end of October '09.

However, support is provided for Win 7 and ConfigMgr 2007 SP1 with KB Article 974236 (titled: “Update rollup for System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 to add support for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 clients”). The intent of this statement is to allow limited support for Win 7 and Server 2008 R2 ConfigMgr client only.

You'll need to deploy ConfigMgr 2007 SP2, as Jeff states:

Service Pack 2 for Configuration Manager is required for the following areas:

  • Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 OS Deployment
  • Admin Console access from a Windows 7 client or Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 hosting site server roles
  • BranchCache
  • Direct Access
  • App-V 4.6 (x64) support
  • Future migration to R3
