Finally got here after quite a long drive. We are staying at the Venetian and it is quite nice. There are quite a few people here already. When you register you get a backpack this year. It is blue, dark blue, but it is an OGIO backpack and it has a side zipper for your laptop as well as small side pockets, a large front pocket and a small front pocket. It actually looks like it will hold up quite well, I have heard this brand of backpack is a quality backpack but can't attest to it myself. I...

I have gotten a ton of emails asking me if I am going to be at MMS this year and when and up until now I have held off because I was waiting for some things to finalize. But today 1E sent out an email to customer letting them know the booth number, and when Sumir, one of the founders of 1E, was going to speak. Which is right after the State of the Union, and also at the same time as Paul Thomsen is presenting his session on ConfigMgr Client Health. So yes , I will be there from Sunday to Friday afternoon...

First of all, Happy New Year, and may everyone find that in 2008 that your glass is more than half full, you and your loved ones are all very healthy and overly happy, that your careers are very prosperous, and that you gain all that you desire and more. As we welcome another year and reflect on the year ending it is always nice to note what was the highlights of the year. So below is my personal top ten of 2007 when it comes to Systems Management. 10. Thursday, October 23rd, System Center Partner...

In another move to get away from the newsgroups Microsoft has opened up the System Center Configuration Manager Community that includes a web based forums section . On the front page you will find a link to the subforums of ConfigMgr, Microsoft employee blogs, MVP blogs (not mine however?), and links to related communities like myITforum.com . The amount of storage you can get with a free online email account now is probably 10x's larger than your first hard drive. I have used Gmail since it was by invite only and it still works great the SPAM filtering works very well and I like the way the conversations only take up a single line, indicating how many in the thread and if it is unread. One thing I would like to see is folders, Stars are okay, and labels help, but folders would be great. The mail search is the key benefit I get from...

Yesterday Kevin C. asked a question on the SMS email list that I get several times a year. "I have a group of servers that a vendor has banned the SMS client from being installed on. We are auto-pushing the client to all servers that are discovered. I do not have the ability to change the OU the servers are in to prevent AD discovery. " There were several responses and if you have thought about doing this or think you might want to do this here is a summary of the options available to accomplish...

During day one it is mostly Hands on Lab (HOL), and the Expo floor opens. I was at the myITforum.com booth when the Expo opened and I have to say it was a mad dash to get the buttons for the party. We actually had conference staff that came over and were very concerned about the crowd and how our neighbors might be impacted. Rod talked to them and smoothed it all out. In less than 12 minutes we gave away all the buttons, after Microsoft saw the draw to the booth they decided to give us their 60 buttons...

On Connect there appears to be a new version of SCCM 2007 it is labeled build 5578, and release date of yesterday. I haven't used SCCM in seveal months and don't recall the build number and haven't seen this confirmed anywhere yet. Main page here , and main Connect page here . As Rod points out , as we closer to MMS you can expect a flood of new SCCM and SCOM information and downloads. If you have not looked at the Windows Live Toolbar I would suggest it for a couple reasons, first if you are still using IE6 it gives you tabbed browsing. The second is you can search the myITforum site directly from the search field in the toolbar with this button! To create the toolbar buttons you can go one of two routes. The first is to design it through their website, this is pretty straight forward, you can select your links and put them, your search link, RSS, tags, button icon, etc. It will...

A long time ago I learned some very important rules of email, which also apply to blogging. Never, ever, ever, think that anything you write will not be read by your manager, director, head of HR, CIO, President, CEO, Board, wife, friends, customers, future customers, future hiring manager (Hello again!), children, those who don’t care for you, peers, NSA - you get the idea. Also never assume that what you write or say will be perceived as you think it should, or repeated in context. And finally...

I am looking for some help testing an application I wrote that combines all the Microsoft status messages, Inbox definitions, and log definitions into a single resource instead of looking at several spreadsheets. This release is the first version and I have plans to add more to it but I wanted to get this portion out for testing and feedback to help guide the future development. The purpose of this tool is to try and make supporting SMS easier so feedback on what works and what you would like to...

The final session I went to this week was Ron’s Web Remote Tools presentation. the day before Ron was telling me that there have been a few people that have taken his code and used it without giving him credit, and some even pawn it off as their own! People are fascinating to me. Anyways Ron discussed how the next version will have a batch file to make the changes needed to adapt it to your own environment instead of editing the pages directly. I did not mind having to do this because I forced me...
