Finally got here after quite a long drive. We are staying at the Venetian and it is quite nice. There are quite a few people here already. When you register you get a backpack this year. It is blue, dark blue, but it is an OGIO backpack and it has a side zipper for your laptop as well as small side pockets, a large front pocket and a small front pocket. It actually looks like it will hold up quite well, I have heard this brand of backpack is a quality backpack but can't attest to it myself. I...

FolderShare has gotten a face lift, new client, and has moved to the Windows Live platform. If you are not familiar with FolderShare Microsoft bought them a couple years ago and the concept is that you can setup shares among computers that sync with each other. I have been using it for years to sync computers and make sure that I have the same documents on each computer. You can set the sync to be automatic or on demand, you can also share your FolderShare libraries with your friends. It is similar...

I wish Microsoft would standardize on either SoftGrid or Microsoft Application Virtualization. Here is a KB on sequencing Office 2007. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;939796 INTRODUCTION This article describes one method that you can use to successfully sequence a 2007 Microsoft Office program for use with Microsoft SoftGrid. The method that is described in this article is not the only method that is available. Additionally, you may have to modify the information in this article...

This is rather interesting. Apparently Microsoft is going to release Google Earth backwards on Feb 27th. Meaning that instead of zooming and panning in on Earth you will be able to do the same with cosmos! This should be quite interesting. It is reported that they will use 10 Earth bound telescopes as well as the beleaguered Hubble telescope to produce an explorable cosmos for your desktop. It will be interesting to see how they deal with distance for the stars as this is always been the major problem...

Yes it is true the ConfigMgr Doc team has released a new update to the offline help included in ConfigMgr! And there is a ton of updates to the help file (see below) included in the 7.5 MB download . I think this is an excellent idea so that you can search and get information when you are testing or if you ConfigMgr server does not have a connection to the Internet. On the System Center Configuration Manager site there is currently a list of five audiocast or podcasts that you can listen to. They are all fairly short and cover a specific area of ConfigMgr. Wally kicks it off with the best practices for upgrading and setup, and also discusses a few new features and prerequisites. I am sure they will add more to this over time so if you are reading this months after it has been posted use the bottom link to get to the page and see the whole list. NOTE: The links...

I know you miss me by now, its been about six months since you saw me last at MMS, back then I worked for a different company and Vista was still brand new, ConfigMgr was just in its first public beta, and the Chargers has a head coach. Well next Tuesday is your chance to come and see me again I will be presenting at Mike Terrill's user group meeting on, you guessed it, ConfigMgr for two hours. I am not a huge fan of PowerPoint so I will be doing as much demo as possible. Mike is giving away...

On Friday October 5th there is also a webcast on deploying an OS with ConfigMgr, you can register for it here . Official announcement below. The other day SCVMM went RTM . So what does this mean? This is a management tool that will allow you to rapidly deploy/create VM's, manage the resources they are using, suck in a physical server to a VM config file (or P to V) and add new virtual resources to existing VM's. If you use Virtual Server you should spend some time looking at this to see if it will benefit you or your organization, for larger Virtual Server farms it will be a no brainer. System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007...

Kevin is right, this has already been talked about , but he does a nice job of explaining the two types of multicasting. Two drawbacks to this however...First you cannot multicast across subnets, well you can but if your network supports this you are wide open to a SQL Slammer type of attack where one laptop brings your network to its knees. Second, you have to have Server 2008 to make this work. A simple, less costly solution, that you can utilize now is to use the 1E OSD Plus Pack , or SMSNomad...

What is the status? Windows Server 2008, formerly Longhorn, will be delayed until Q1 of 2008 but will be available to SA and MSDN subscribers prior to RTM. SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 are scheduled to be released with Server 2008 so I can only assume they will be delayed as well. Vista SP1 also suffers from the same fate, delayed until Q1 of 08. The BETA of Vista SP1 will be available to participants in about two weeks however. And SP3 for XP is moving along with its BETA also being out...

If you have never worked with Microsoft PSS, PFE, QFE, MCS, RRE, or any other arm of their professional support staff you may not be aware of the tools that these army of men and women come equipped with to resolve issues. These are often home grown, field developed, custom tools that these same folks have written to help customers and the support staff at Microsoft quickly resolve issues and the WMIDiag tool is a prime example of this. Often these tools are used only by the Microsoft staff and are...

Late last year I first posted about Vienna, the next version of Windows. It has changed code names again and is now called Windows Version 7. Let's hope it is better looking than Windows Version 3.15. It is due out in 2010, which puts on a four year release cycle instead of three, but is better than five. As some still struggle with the reasoning behind upgrading to Vista it looks like they will still offer support for 32 bit computing instead of 64 bit only in 2010. Which means that if your...

In this podcast the CEO of Endeavors Technologies is interviewed and covers their application virtualization technology and their patent agreements with other vendors. The highlights of the podcast are listed below. The most important information I found out of this interview is that their technology will allow virtualized or streamed applications to talk to each other. This means with their product you will not need to sequence all the dependencies with each application, for example, you would not...

Back in May Microsoft released the same type of fix for Windows 2003 and now it is ready for XP clients. SMS admins understand the pain of WMI corruption as well as anyone, and probably better than most. Getting permission denied errors when it has nothing to do with permissions, trying to diagnose client issues remotely when WMI is not reporting the correct or latest data, the painful memories return so quickly... With this update applied you should get better stability from WMI, integrated into...

Microsoft has added a fifth piece to the Desktop Optimization Pack, System Center Desktop Error Reporting. From the looks of the brief description this doesn't add a whole lot of detail but since they modified the MOM licensing to make you pay $20 per hook into the db we can't complain too much. The Vista compliant SoftGrid client is also going to be out this summer, don't recall if I mentioned that before or not but a co-worker had asked several weeks ago and I got a reply but forgot...
