Microsoft released the ConfigMgr SDK yesterday. You can get the download here . It includes DCM Digest Authoring guide, DCM digest schema, a SUM gadget that gives you current status messages on patches you have deployed, samples on creating admin console extensions, OSD custom task sequences and more. I wish Microsoft would standardize on either SoftGrid or Microsoft Application Virtualization. Most IT related folks have an old laptop laying around that is too slow for what they need to do or they get a brand new one every six months. I know I have one that the hard drive has bad sectors on and don't want to spend the $40-60 to get a replacement drive since I have over half a dozen computers in my house and only four people. I have used it for testing in the past, setting up Server 2003 with SMS 2003 on it for upgrade testing to CM, testing the 1E products in different configurations...

In ConfigMgr there is a new feature that hasn't gotten much attention called Maintenance Windows. As you already know with the release of SP3 for SMS 2003 the Asset Intelligence integration is now included. Sequencing The sequencing process consists of three different wizards , you can not use the wizards but why? If you ego tells you "we work in IT - we are computer experts, we don't use wizards! Here are some of my notes from my testing and data gathering, touched up a little for readability. This discusses some (more)of the options of setting up your sequencing workstation and some of the pitfalls to try and avoid. If you don't use OneNote you are missing out! Exclusions - Why would you want to exclude something? Well by default cookies, Internet cache directories, history, etc are not monitored for changes, you can remove these exclusions if you are going to need changes to these folders...

In SMS 2003 you had to specify an account with local admin privileges on the computers you were targeting for the client push. Typically this was an account that was in the Domain Admins group, even though it was not recommended. But because of local Administrator password problems, users with local admin rights and so on using anything less often netted very little success. This download contains four files, the getting_started_itpro.rtf, readme_WAIK.rtf, unattend.chm, and waik.chm. In the Getting Started guide, they cover the “end-to-end deployment scenario”, which includes building a lab, building an answer file (unattend.xml), building a master installation (reference computer), creating and deploying an image.
