Repurpose That Old Laptop

February 23, 2008

Most IT related folks have an old laptop laying around that is too slow for what they need to do or they get a brand new one every six months. I know I have one that the hard drive has bad sectors on and don't want to spend the $40-60 to get a replacement drive since I have over half a dozen computers in my house and only four people. I have used it for testing in the past, setting up Server 2003 with SMS 2003 on it for upgrade testing to CM, testing the 1E products in different configurations...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment. ConfigMgr Maintenance Windows Explained

December 03, 2007

In ConfigMgr there is a new feature that hasn't gotten much attention called Maintenance Windows. This is a feature that I have heard numerous requests for and it gets a bit closer to the infamous 'Big Red Button'. So what is a maintenance window? A maintenance window is a rule applied to a collection of ConfigMgr clients that prevents those clients from: Executing a program, including a standard program such as setup.exe Running Software Updates And launching any Operating System Deployments...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment. This means that you will get better data for software inventories, no more Visio v 3.445.3452134.4634.a and Microsoft Visio v 3.445.3452134.4634.b, it will just be Microsoft Visio v 3.445.3452134.4634...I kid...You reports should be much more readable and all those executables that have sat dormant in your software inventory database will now come to life because of the correlation between...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment. SoftGrid - Importing An Application How To

April 22, 2007

So now that you have successfully sequenced an application, now what the heck do you do with it? The very short answer is you import it. But what would be the point of this post if I didn't explain it? So to start I will cover the console and then walk through the process of getting the application to actually work for your clients. The Console - A Brief Explanation I am going to assume you can already connect to the console on your SoftGrid server and not cover that. On the left is the tree...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment. Filed under: ,

SoftGrid Sequencing How To

April 21, 2007

Sequencing The sequencing process consists of three different wizards , you can not use the wizards but why? If you ego tells you "we work in IT - we are computer experts, we don't use wizards! Besides what if someone saw us!?" Ignore those thoughts, if you were an expert at sequencing you wouldn't bother reading this! Trust me use the wizards until you are an expert and even then it is probably easier than doing it manually, and eventually it will be built into SCCM so it will...  ... Read the full post or  the first comment. SoftGrid Sequencing - Setup (Continued)

April 17, 2007

Here are some of my notes from my testing and data gathering, touched up a little for readability. This discusses some (more)of the options of setting up your sequencing workstation and some of the pitfalls to try and avoid. If you don't use OneNote you are missing out! Exclusions - Why would you want to exclude something? Well by default cookies, Internet cache directories, history, etc are not monitored for changes, you can remove these exclusions if you are going to need changes to these folders...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment. SCCM 2007 - Client Push Installation Account

March 09, 2007

In SMS 2003 you had to specify an account with local admin privileges on the computers you were targeting for the client push. Typically this was an account that was in the Domain Admins group, even though it was not recommended. But because of local Administrator password problems, users with local admin rights and so on using anything less often netted very little success. New in SCCM is the ability to use the computer$ account for the install. This means that you can now use the SMS server's computer...  ... Read the full post or  be the first to comment.
