The amount of storage you can get with a free online email account now is probably 10x's larger than your first hard drive. I have used Gmail since it was by invite only and it still works great the SPAM filtering works very well and I like the way the conversations only take up a single line, indicating how many in the thread and if it is unread. One thing I would like to see is folders, Stars are okay, and labels help, but folders would be great. The mail search is the key benefit I get from it though. I subscribe to the myITforum.com SMS mailing list with this account and I archive the old emails but when I have an issue or someone asks a question I use it as a knowledge base, I have years of emails from the mailing list so when I search I get a wide list of results. Below is a link to Inbox.com, Windows Live Mail, and Gmail all of which offer online email with large amounts of storage and they are free, with any of these you can begin building your own knowledge base on SMS or anything else that has a mailing list.
Inbox.com 5GB free or 30GB paid $29.98/yr.
Free Inbox.com toolbar.
Note: The free version does not include a backup of your email.
Gmail Google is currently at 2.6GB but they are slowly adding space every day.
There are all kinds of plugins for Gmail
Windows Live Hotmail is 2GB
If you use Vista there are plugins for this.
Any of these would work, it comes down to how much space you need, protecting your email address to avoid getting a ton of SPAM, and the search ability of the email provider. I like Gmail because of the search and the way the conversations are displayed on a single line. My Hotmail email account has been around too long and I get far too many emails to it from family, friends, and peers to use it for a knowledge base, their emails would get lost in the traffic. I just signed up for Inbox.com so I can't really compare it, but we will see how it goes.

Anthony
