Toshiba Tecra M7 Versus the Rest

January 04, 2007

I am looking at getting a new Tablet PC for work. I need it to run virtual labs, presentations, video conferencing, and day to day work on it. From what I can find on the different manufacturers web sites the Toshiba Tecra M7 offers the fastest CPU at 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, and it also has an nVidia 128MB graphics card instead of the built in Intel, shared memory, card, it also offers a 100GB SATA 7200 RPM drive. The other specs are typical of all the other makers.

I have had several Tablets over the past half dozen years and two of them were Toshiba's. While they worked fine they both had a tendency to get very hot and the fan seemed to stay on all the time. In discussing my last Tablet, the HP (Compaq) tc4400 with someone who also had an older Toshiba he had the same issues with the fan constantly running. I did a little more digging and it seems that we are not alone. So that leaves me to wonder if I will have the same problems with this Toshiba. If any of you have used this model or know someone shoot me an email and let me know if they have fixed the fan issue or not! I don't want to get this thing and have it end up being heater.

Thanks!

BTW the tool Notebook Hardware Control, is supposed to allow you to lower the voltage and reduce the heat, and not require as much fan usage if you are having similar problems. I guess that CPU manufacturers run the CPU's at max voltage but you can lower it without sacrificing performance.
